What I love about this painting, is less is more. In this mixed media painting I paired down and simplified layers, reducing the layers I arrived at what feels like a powerful gesture of emotion and intention. Also, I began this painting in a unique way. As a first layer I wrote in crayon part of a poem by British mystic, William Law. He writes: “But there is a root or depth in thee from whence all these faculties come forth, as lines from a centre or as branches from the body of a tree. This depth is called the Centre, the Fund or Bottom of the soul.” I’ve long been interested in how abstraction and poetry can merge, how the written word is similar to the painted gesture. I am beginning to bring text into my painted language more intentionally.
