This diptych is the newest painting in the show, completed in July. It is part of my ongoing Famiglia Series. Its title is taken from a poem by my poet-friend Mary Ladany: “How are we to live with both laughter and tears, body and soul.”
Spiritually, I have always been drawn to the contrasts inherent in living a human life — as Rilke said so clearly, we each encounter both beauty and terror. I have lived through moments of deep despair and trauma, as well as heights of joy and transcendence. In this work, I give visual form to that duality.
